Mapping the Middle School Campus with GPS

Two students uploading their data to a computer

At the Middle School, fifth-grade teachers Laurie Kaczanowski and Jen Bayley, integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) technology into a social studies chapter on navigation. In addition to learning about latitude, longitude, compasses and how to read maps, students had a chance to see the principles applied to real life. They learned how GPS has changed the science of locating things: exploration, cartography, tracking endangered species, and even rescue operations. The classes headed outside and used GPS devices to take satellite readings around campus. Partners uploaded data to their computers and used it to create custom maps.
