Children grow and develop in many ways and at different rates. You will notice changes in your child's language, cognitive skills, body movements and social-emotional behaviors. This is a magical time filled with fun, imagination and increasing independence by your child! Below you will find great resources to help your child succeed in school. The best way to help your child build these skills is to model them and practice together.

Number sense activities help children see patterns in numbers and number relationships.

Use Math language, such as greater, fewer, equal to, same as, adding, joining, seperating, subtracting
Practice counting forward and backward
Practice counting objects - how many are all together? What would one more be?
Practice recognizing and writing numbers

Life Skills for Kindergarteners

Skills to be a successful student

Teach your child to be independent. Zippers, tying laces, putting on jackets, using a scissors, opening food packages
Teach children to listen and follow directions at home. Give a couple of directions and have them repeat it before they start.
Teach children to wait. In school they will have to wait for many things. Explain everyone needs a turn.
Encourage your child to be a problem solver. "I'm bored." Respond with "How many things can you think of to do in 5 minutes?"
Teach children that not everyone can win. Lose gracefully without anger or pouting.
Teach your child basic friendship skills. Be polite, say thank you and please. Listen and don't interrupt. If your child isn't being treated in a positive manner role play with them to empower them to say how they feel.
