Art Club (grades 5-6)

The purpose of the 5/6 Art Club is to encourage and enhance student interest, creativity, knowledge and skills in manipulating art materials.  Student activities may include mandala creations, oil paintings, recreations of famous paintings, ceramic sculptures, collage masks and portrait painting.  The Art Club provides a fun way to realize unique and creative challenges through both individual and team efforts. The Art Club is divided into two groups, the Monet Art Club and the Da Vinci Art Club, in order to accommodate the large number of interested students and each meet every other Tuesday.

Art Club (grades 7-8)

The Middle School 7-8 Art Club is for creative students dedicated to the making of fine arts and crafts for purposes of self-expression with an awareness of school, community, artistic and cultural themes. Art projects will include a variety of mediums in both two and three dimension.

Seventh and eighth graders wanting to extend their art classroom experience are welcome to join.

Senior High Art & Design Club (grades 9-12)

The mission of the Senior High Art Club is to provide students with increased opportunities in the arts.  Activities vary depending on the interest of the club members.  Past projects included group sculptures, throwing on the potter's wheel, community art projects, drawing and painting from the model and an art history fashion show.  Any student in grades 9-12 are welcome to attend.

Computer Graphics Club (grades 9-12)

This club is designed for any 9-12 grade students who are interested in Digital Media, Animation, Video Game Art Design, Special Effects, Digital Photography, Art for Web Sites, or any other aspects of computer graphics. The club offers opportunities to learn a wide variety of computer graphics software (Carrara, Poser, Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D Studio Max, Adobe Premier, Serif Movie Plus video editor, and many more!) The club meets every Wednesday in the digital lab at the high school (room 1339)

Ceramics Club (grades 9-12)

The Ceramics Club offers members an opportunity to experience the world of 3D design through the medium of Pottery and Sculpture.  The club will encourage members to learn new techniques in the Ceramic Arts including hand-building, wheel throwing, decorative work and design.


Members will:

  • learn important studio processes like storage, kiln firing, glazing and construction

  • be encouraged to develop personal goals in the Ceramic Arts finding new directions, innovations in process and material as they create unique works

  • have the opportunity to produce works for the Empty Bowls project fundraiser that is held every year in the Rochester area.

Music Clubs

 

Jazz Band (grades 5-6)

This musical ensemble is designed for the beginning jazz musician. This ensemble will introduce students to jazz improvisation and performance of traditional jazz styles. Rehearsals focus both on written and improvised materials. It is open to all instrumental band students and any students with proficiency on electric guitar, bass, piano, or drum set.

5-6 Select Chorus-Surround Sound (grades 5-6)

Surround sound is a select vocal ensemble for 5th and 6th grade chorus students.  The group consists of around thirty members.  This select ensemble meets after school one day a week.  The group performs music from the genres of pop, jazz, and musical theater.  To become a member of this group you must be a member of chorus, audition and be selected.  Auditions occur in September.  This group performs at all choral concerts for 5th and 6th grade as well as additional performance opportunities throughout the year.

Junior High Jazz Band (grades 7-8)

This musical ensemble is designed for the beginning to intermediate jazz musician. This ensemble will introduce students to jazz improvisation and performance of traditional jazz styles. Vocal Ensemble Director-Amplified (grades 7-8)

Vocal Ensemble is a select show choir of 7th and 8th grade students who sing and perform choreography for stage show and popular songs.  Students are selected by audition in the fall of each school year.  Rehearsals are held 2-3 times weekly in the morning at 7:00 a.m.

Swingin' Saints Jazz Band (grades 9-12)

The Churchville Chili Senior High Jazz Ensemble, also known as the Swingin’ Saints Jazz Band, is an auditioned group, open to all students in grades 9-12.  Students rehearse after school once a week and are taught jazz performance styles, articulations and improvisation. Traditional Jazz Band instruments are any of the saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, guitar, drums, and bass. Other instruments can be added as needed and/or available. Over the years, the group has traveled all over the east coast and has received Excellent and Superior ratings at a variety of festivals and competitions.  Performances often include the Evening of Jazz, and the Community Music Festival. Other performances can be added as they become available.

Off The Beat (grades 9-12)

Off the Beat is an A Cappella ensemble made up of 9th through 12th graders that auditions in September annually.  Audition requirements are based on individual vocal strength and ability to blend.  We meet Tuesday afternoons from 2pm- 3:30pm. Repertoire is made up of madrigals, popular selections, and jazz tunes. This ensemble regularly performs in and around the community, carols during the winter, as well as takes part in possible trips and performances in the spring.

Singing Saints (grades 9-12)

Singing Saints is a select ensemble of fourteen to twenty students who sing and dance popular music and stage shows.  Auditions are held for the group and selection is made by an audition committee on the basis of the individual solo strength of each voice, the ability to blend well, the ability to move and dance well, and the ability to project stage presence and character.  Students from grades 10 through 12 who are in Chorus or Concert Choir are eligible to audition.  Performance apparel is selected and purchased by group members.

Varsity Vocals (grades 10-12)

Varsity Vocals is a 9 person performing group most regularly performing contemporary, advanced a Cappella selections. While this is not a “dancing” ensemble, the members are expected to be able to show expression of the music through gestures and facial expression. During some selections there could be staged movement. This group was conceived from students requesting a smaller, more select, and more rigorous repertoire selections than Off the Beat. Members will not be in both Off the Beat and Varsity Vocals. Students in grades 10-12 will be eligible for this group. The members of this group will be responsible for learning their individual parts on their own, and showing up to rehearsal with their part learned. This group will meet on Friday afternoons after school hours. This group will be performing at concerts as well as competitions, and special engagements throughout the year.

Chorus/Band Council (grades 10-12)

SHS Music Councils are comprised of a select group of members from each of the SHS music ensembles who serve as Officers for their respective groups. Elections are held annually to select officers and the students that are elected by their ensemble peers serve a one-year term. Council members meet bi-monthly to plan for major trips, fundraising, and team-building experiences for the larger ensemble. Additionally, members of the SH Music Council have representation at the monthly Music Booster Meetings to share and plan with the parent organization.

Senior High School Pep Band (9-12)

The SHS Pep Band is a yearlong ensemble that prepares fight songs and repertoire to be performed at various sporting events during the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons. Prior to the beginning of each season, the Pep Band Director will work with the Director of Fine Arts and Athletic Director to determine at which contests the group will perform. Specific instrumentation will vary based on student availability and interest but all instruments are welcome to join and perform.

Commencement Music Director (12)

The SHS Commencement Music Directors are responsible for coordinating and preparing all student musical performances to be presented annually at the SHS Commencement Ceremony. Typically, the SHS Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir are the featured large ensembles with small group and solo performances prepared as needed. Advisors are required to work with the building principal and Fine Arts Director to finalize all musical programming and coordinate the logistics of the event.

Theater & Drama Clubs

 

Drama Club (grades 5-6)

S.T.A.G.E. Club (Students of The Arts Gaining Experience) is open to all 5th and 6th graders. Club members participate in acting workshops, learn audition techniques, and develop confidence in performing.  S.T.A.G.E. sponsors a full scale production and talent show every year.

Grade 5 Musical (grade 5)

The grade 5 musical is open to any 5th grade student who would like to be a part of a major musical production. Sponsored by the S.T.A.G.E. Club, students in the grade 5 musical have the opportunity to rehearse to perform onstage or work backstage in a junior version of a musical.  Although this opportunity is open to any 5th grader, there is a required audition to participate.

Middle School Musical (grades 6-8)

The Middle School Musical is open to all students in grades 6-8. Although parts are selected through an audition process, no prior experience is necessary. We put on full length musicals with singing, dancing, acting, costumes, props, scenery, etc. If students do not wish to participate on-stage, there are plenty of opportunities to assist with the technical aspects of theater such as: set building, painting, lights, and sound.

Middle School Talent Show (grades 5-8)

The Middle School Talent Show is open to all 5-8 graders that audition and are approved to perform. Acts have traditionally been, but are not limited to, the following: singing, dancing, instrumentals, rock bands, magic, acting, etc. Practice times are varied but a rehearsal schedule is given out prior to auditions. Flyers will go up early in the school year to let you know when auditions will be held. Only performance-ready acts will be included in the final performance.

Drama Club (grades 7-8)

The 7-8 Drama Club is open to any 7th and 8th grader students who have participated in S.T.A.G.E. Club or are new to the stage.  Participants develop acting skills, play improvisation games, and sometimes serve as models to teach those skills to their younger peers at S.T.A.G.E. Club meetings.  The club sponsors a musical and talent show every year.

Drama Club (grades 9-12)

Drama Club is an organization for any student interested in the theater here at Churchville-Chili. The club is open to all 9th-12th grade students and is responsible for three productions throughout the school year (Fall Play, Annual Shakespeare Competition, Spring Coffee House).


Students have the opportunity to participate in the productions either onstage as a performer or backstage as a crew member. They can also participate by submitting plays and poetry for the Spring Coffee House, attending meetings and participating in theater activities and games, and many other theater experiences.


Drama Club is a safe space for students to explore and perform art, learn about themselves and others, celebrate diversity, and recognize student excellence in theater arts. We strive to make theater accessible as well as to challenge and encourage growth in young artists and performers in a positive environment.

Senior High School Play (grades 9-12)

9th-12th grade students have the opportunity to participate in this production both onstage as a performer and backstage on stage crew. Students rehearse the play, help design and build the set, get experience with make-up, props, and costumes, and perform the show for a live audience. We choose a variety of shows to allow students to gain experience with different types of theater, including satire, comedy, and drama, for example.

Senior High School Musical (grades 9-12)

The Senior High School Musical is open to all students in grades 9-12. Through participating in this production, students have the opportunity to participate onstage, backstage on stage crew, or as a musician in the pit orchestra. Students rehearse the show, help design and build the set, get experience with make-up, props, costumes, lights, dance and choreography, sound, and perform in the pit orchestra. Students then perform the show for a live audience, as well as a group of adjudicators from the Rochester Broadway Theater League’s Stars of Tomorrow program. Later, students have the opportunity to attend and perform at the annual Stars of Tomorrow Gala evening at the Rochester Auditorium Theater, where outstanding schools and performers are recognized. The production staff is a group of professionals from our teaching staff and the community whose common goal is to make sure that the students involved have the best experience and productions possible while focusing on educating through theater.

Senior High School Coffeehouse Production (grades 9-12)

This is a completely student-centered production that takes place in late spring. Open to all 9-12 grade students, participants perform plays, poetry, music and other written works written by their peers. This is done in a “Coffee House” style, with the audience seated at tables with access to drinks and food during the show. This production gives the students an opportunity to explore their creativity and theatrical abilities through writing and performing.

Air Guitar (grades 9-12)

Although this club is titled “Air Guitar,” it is truly a talent show showcasing much of Churchville-Chili’s hidden talent.  The show is made up of rock bands, dancers, soloists, guitarist, vocalists, pianists, sometimes true Air Guitar acts. It is also a fun show with the emcees adding their humorous skits between acts and their unique way of introducing the performers.  The club is open to students in grades 9 – 12 with two nights of try-outs, three rehearsals, and then the show.

Audio Technical Club (grades 9-12)

The Senior High School Audio Technical Club is open to any 9-12 grade students that would like to expand their knowledge of the many facets of working behind-the-scenes in a theatrical environment. Students participating in this club will receive in-depth training and then gain real-life experience in supporting live events in any of our performing art venues. 


Through their participation in this club, students will learn about: sound reinforcement, lighting design and follow spot operation, safe fly usage, live operation etiquette, projecting video feeds, equipment security and maintenance, auditorium safety and emergency procedures, as well as engage in seasonal and yearlong video and sound recording and editing projects.
