French classes at middle school make crepes to celebrate La Chandeleur

French students in Madame Vanham's classes at the middle school celebrated the French holiday La Chandeleur this week by collaborating with Mrs. VanEenwyk to visit the Family and Consumer Science classroom and make crepes!

La Chandeleur, also known as Candlemas, is a traditional French holiday that is celebrated on February 2nd. The holiday is characterized by the making and eating of crêpes, which is a traditional French dish and is often served with a variety of sweet or savory fillings. La Chandeleur is a time to enjoy the company of family and friends.

Students used Madame Vanham's own crepes recipe to create the treat, then topped them off with an assortment of fruit and syrups. If you'd like to try your own hand at making the crepes at home, you can find Madame Vanham's recipe below.

Crepes invite 2025

One of Madame Vanham's students also created an invitation for the event, to be shared with Superintendent Peluso (seen to the right). The invitation was written in French, with an adorable image of a crepe.

RECIPE FOR CREPES:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 4 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • 5 eggs
  • 4 1/2 cups milk

Mix flour and sugar and make a well in the center. Put eggs and oil in center and begin to mix. Add milk little by little (you may not use all milk). Heat pan and put in just enough batter to coat pan. Crepes will cook very quickly. Brown first side and flip over to set other side. Makes about 20 crepes.
