I. Ancient World and Belief Systems

 

A. World Systems (3 days)

1. Define the characteristics and give examples of belief systems. (2.3.3)

2. Define the characteristics and give examples of political systems. (2.3.3)

3. Define the characteristics and give examples of economic systems. (2.3.3)

 

B. Neolithic Revolution (1 day)

1. Describe how the Neolithic Revolution was a turning point in world history. (2.2.5)

2. Describe the meaning of the following terms: nomadic/nomad, hunter/gatherer, subsistence agriculture, agricultural revolution, traditional economy, civilization. (2.3.1)

 

C. Early River Valley Civilizations (3-4 days)

1. Research and analyze two of four specific River Valley Civilizations - Nile (Egypt), Tigris and Euphrates (Mesopotamia), Indus and Ganges (India), and Yellow/ Huang-he (China). (2.3.1)

2. Identify similar characteristics of the 4 River Valley Civilizations. (2.1.1)

3. Locate, identify and list early river valley civilizations. (3.1.2)

4. Analyze important ideas, social and cultural values, beliefs and traditions within a civilization. (2.4.4)

 

D. Classical Civilizations (5-6 days)

1. Describe the cause and effect of the fall of the Roman Empire. (2.2.5)

2. Define the term “Pax Romana”. (2.1.4)

3. Explain how classical civilizations have impacted world history including rule of law, democracy and religion (Christianity and Judaism). (2.3.1)

4. Recognize the contributions of Classical Civilizations in regard to art, science, architecture, and philosophy. (2.3.1)

5. Describe the characteristics of the Hellenistic Culture. (2.1.4)

6. Describe the characteristics of the Han Dynasty including the development of the Silk Road and the Middle Kingdom. (2.1.4)

 

 

II. Golden Ages and Empires

 

A. Byzantine Empire (2 days)

1. Identify on a map the location of the Byzantine Empire. (3.1.4)

2. Recognize the contributions of the Byzantine Empire including law (Justinian’s Code), art and architecture (Hagia Sophia). (2.3.1)

3. Recognize the geographic importance of Constantinople as a major trading center between Eastern and Western cultures. (3.1.4)

4. Describe the creation and importance of the Eastern Orthodox Church. (2.3.1)

 

B. Golden Ages of Asia and India (2-3 days)

1. Recognize the contributions of the Golden Ages including Tang, Song and Gupta in regards to art, science and math. (2.3.2)

2. Explain how Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism have affected Asian and Indian civilizations. (2.3.1)

 

C. Mongol Empire (2-3 days)

1. Identify and locate the spread of the Mongol Empire. (2.2.3)

2. Explain the success of the Genghis Khan and the Mongols rise to power. (2.3.1)

3. Recognize the impact the Golden Horde had on Russia. (2.1.2)

4. Recognize the impact Kublai Khan/Yuan Dynasty had on China. (2.3.1)

5. Define Pax Mongolia. (2.1.4)

6. List the causes for the decline of the Mongol Empire. (2.2.5)

 

 

III. Changing World

 

A. The Golden Age of Islam (3 days)

1. Identify and locate the spread of Islam. (2.1.4)

2. Define the Five Pillars of Islam. (2.1.1)

3. Analyze the social, political and economic effects of Islam. (2.3.1)

4. Recognize the contributions of the Golden Age of Islam art, science, math (absolute zero), medicine, literature (preservation of Greek and Roman classics). ( 2.3.1)

 

B. African Civilizations (2 days)

1. Identify and locate on a map the kingdoms of Africa including Ghana, Mali and Songhai. (3.1.4)

2. Explain the cause and effects of the gold/salt trade routes in Africa. (2.4.2)

3. Describe the contributions of Mansa Musa. (2.3.1)

4. Recognize the cultural advancements of African kingdoms including universities, art and the city of Timbuktu. (2.3.1)

 

C. The Middle Ages (4 days)

1. Define the characteristics of a feudalistic society. (2.1.1)

2. Explain how political aspects of feudalism developed into the economic system of manorialism, Commercial Revolution, and the guild system. ( 2.2.3)

3. Explain the limitation of monarch’s power including the Magna Carta and the development of a parliamentary system. (5.1.2)

4. Explain the spiritual and secular role of the Church as it pertains to feudalism and the growth of anti-Semitism. (2.3.1)

5. Describe the limited cultural advancements of the European Middle Ages for example Romanesque and gothic architecture, art and literature. (2.3.1)

 

D. Japanese Feudalism (2 days)

1. Identify and locate the archipelago of Japan on a map. (3.2.3)

2. Explain the significance of Japan’s unique geographical characteristics including its island location, lack of raw materials, limited cultural diffusion and volcanic activity. (3.2.4)

3. Explain the connection between the geography of Japan and the development of the Shinto religion. (2.2.3)

4. Describe the feudalistic characteristics of Japan. (2.1.1)

 

 

IV. The Growth of Europe

 

A. High Middle Ages and the Crusades (2 days)

1. Identify on a map the geographic location of the Crusades and its relationship to Europe. (2.3.2)

2. Explain the social, political and economic causes and effects of the Crusades. (2.2.5)

3. Explain the social, political and economic effects of the Bubonic Plague. (2.2.5)

 

B. The Renaissance (3 days)

1. Describe the social, political and economic causes and effects of the Renaissance. (2.1.1)

2. Define the following terms: humanism, renaissance, secularism. (2.1.1)

3. Identify the literature and artistic contributions of the Renaissance including da Vinci, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Shakespeare. (2.3.1)

 

C. The Protestant Reformation (4 days)

1. Explain the causes and effects of the Protestant Reformation including the development of the printing press and the Gutenberg Bible. (2.2.5)

2. Describe how Luther’s 95 Thesis led to the growth of the Protestant religions. (2.3.1)

3. Identify the characteristics of the Protestant religions including Lutheranism and Henry VIII/Church of England. (2.3.1)

4. Explain the cause and effect of the responses to the growth of Protestant religion including the Counter-Reformation, the Inquisition and Jesuits. (2.2.5)

 

 

V. The Age of Exploration

 

A. Ming Dynasty (2 days)

1. Describe the significance of the voyages of Zheng He. (2.3.1)

2. Explain the cause and effect of Chinese isolation by the 16th century. (2.4.4)

3. Describe the cultural characteristics of Ming Dynasty including footbinding. (2.1.1)

 

B. Ottoman Empire (2 days)

1. Identify and locate the territories during the growth of the Ottoman Empire to the height of their power in the 17th century. (3.1.5)

2. Identify the social, political and economic contributions of the Ottoman Empire. (2.3.1)

3. Identify the significance of the fall of Byzantine Constantinople in 1453. (2.1.2)

 

C. Meso-American Empires (2-3 days)

1. Identify and locate the Mayan, Aztec and Incan Civilizations. (3.1.4)

2. Categorize the contributions of the Mayans, Aztecs and Incans Civilizations. (2.3.1)

 

D. Spanish and Portuguese Exploration (1-2 days)

1. Recognize the Reconquista as a cause of European exploration. (2.3.1)

2. Identify the reasons for Spanish and Portuguese exploration including technology changes and the phrase “God, Glory and Gold”. (2.3.2)

3. Identify the major European explorers including Columbus and Magellan. (2.3.1)

 

E. Colonialism and Old Imperialism (3 days)

1. Identify the characteristics of the Colombian Exchange, the Encomienda system and the fall of the Meso American Civilizations. (2.1.1)

2. Describe the rise of mercantilism in response to colonialism including the Triangular Trade. (2.1.2)

3. Describe the causes of the rise of the African slave trade and the decline of African civilizations. (2.1.2)
